For systems with two or more hard disks, each NETAVIS Observer standard installation sets up the NETAVIS Software RAID by default. Automatically, all data regarding operating system, application components and database (=system data) are redundantly stored on the first two disks upon installation.

In case of a hard disk failure of one of these two system disks, the system can be booted from the remaining hard disk and is still able to operate fully. However, the broken disk should be replaced as soon as possible. NETAVIS Observer will copy the system data to the replaced disk automatically, thus the NETAVIS Software RAID is restored. The image data in contrary will not be recorded redundantly. To save archive space, all recordings are - frame by frame (or GOP by GOP) – evenly distributed across the available number of hard disks. Due to this even distribution, the loss of image data is kept to a minimum with NETAVIS Software RAID. In most of the installations, the recorded situations will stay fluently visible in case of hard disk failure. Even if the frames-per-second settings are very low (e.g. 3 fps) and the portion of affected archive is high (e.g. one out of two hard disks = 50 %), every second frame will be available and provide a 1,5 fps coverage of the recorded period of time. This still allows for an overview of what happened instead of a full archive loss. |

NETAVIS Software RAID is a feature of the powerful and high performing NETAVIS Observer video management platform and included for free. Minimum requirement is a system with two hard disks. For systems with a single hard disk, the NETAVIS Software RAID will not be used. Of course, NETAVIS Observer can be configured on systems with hardware RAID as well.
